Amherst, Mass. – The visiting Trinity College Bantams dropped a 3-0 decision against the Amherst College Purple and White in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action this evening at LeFrak Gymnasium. Trinity drops to 10-12 overall and 1-8 in the NESCAC entering tomorrow's season finale at league foe Williams College, while Amherst improves to 15-8 overall and 6-3 in league action.
Leading, 11-6, early in the first set, Trinity yielded 10 unanswered points including three kills by Maggie Danner to swing the momentum back to the home team, and the Purple and White finished with a 25-17 victory in the opening frame. A back-and-forth second set saw Amherst clinch another 25-17 win after playing to three tie scores and a pair of lead changes.
The third set saw five more tie scores and the sides exchanged the lead four times before Amherst ran its lead to as many as five at 21-16. The Bantams used a kill by first-year Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) and a service ace by classmate Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) to help narrow the gap to two at 21-19 before a Trinity service error and two Amherst kills set the score at 24-19. Another Boughton kill made it 24-20, but Nicole Gould capped the match with her eighth kill of the contest to set the final score at 25-20 and preserve the sweep for the Purple & White.
Danner finished with a match-high 10 kills and added a pair of solo blocks, while Gould followed with eight kills for Amherst. Scheffers led Trinity with seven kills, three aces and nine digs, while Boughton, sophomore Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.), and first-year Carter Stancil (Orem, Utah) notched five kills each. Senior tri-captain S Randi Whitham (Weymouth, Mass.) handed out 22 assists and collected 10 digs, while junior Grace Metry (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Underwood finished with a team-high 14 digs apiece. Senior tri-captain Shelby Deck (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Boughton added eight digs each in the loss.
