Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantams defeated the visiting Princeton University Tigers, 7-2, in men's squash action this evening at Kellner Squash Center. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improves to 13-1 with its fifth straight win, while the No. 3-ranked Tigers suffer their first loss and fall to 8-1.
Trinity led, 2-1, after the first wave thanks to a quick, 3-0 win at No. 9 by Moustafa Hamada (Alexandria, Egypt) and a 3-1 triumph at No. 3 by fellow rookie Miled Zarazua (Mexico City, Mexico). The Bantams clinched the victory early with a sweep of the second wave, as junior Johan Detter (Malmoe, Sweden) at No. 5 and sophomore Matthew Mackin (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 8 posted 3-0 triumphs, while senior co-captain Antonio Diaz-Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico) toughed out an 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9 victory over Princeton senior Chris Callis (Wyndmoor, Pa.) in the No. 2 match for the fifth Bantam point.
Trinity junior Reinhold Hergeth (Bloemfontein, South Africa) won in five games over Tiger senior Kelly Shannon (Calgary, Alberta), ranked No. 9 nationally at the close of last season, and Bantam senior co-captain Vikram Malhotra (Mumbai, India) closed the evening with a 7-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-4, 11-9 triumph over Princeton junior Todd Harrity (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the No. 1 match. Harrity was ranked No. 1 and Malhotra was ranked No. 3 at the end of last year. Senior Clay Blackiston (Greenwich, Conn.) and Dylan Ward (Chestnut Hill, Pa.) earned the Tiger points in the No. 6 and No. 7 match, respectively.
