Hartford, Conn. – First-year Zeyad Elshorafy (Alexandria, Egypt) won the clinching match, as the Trinity College Bantams defeated the visiting Yale University Bulldogs, 7-2, this evening in a men's squash match at Kellner Center. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improves to 9-0 and avenges a 5-4 loss almost exactly one year ago that ended the longest winning streak in the history of intercollegiate varsity sports at 252 in a row. No. 4-ranked Yale falls to 7-1. The Bantams have won 153 consecutive home matches dating back to the 1995-96 campaign.
Trinity led, 2-1, after the first wave of matches thanks to 3-0 wins by senior co-captain Johan Detter (Malmoe, Sweden) and junior Matthew Mackin (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 6 and No. 9, respectively. Bantam sophomore No. 8 Moustafa Hamada (Alexandria, Egypt) and Yale freshman No. 5 Sam Fenwick (Cardiff, Wales) traded 3-0 triumphs to make the score, 3-2, before Trinity rookie Juan Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) coasted to a 3-0 win at the No. 2 position and Elshorafy did the same at No. 7 for the fifth Bantam points. Trinity senior co-captain No. 1 Reinhold Hergeth (Bloemfontein, South Africa) and freshman No. 4 Karan Malik (Mumbai, India) both won after the clincher to account for the final score. Senior co-captain Richard Dodd (Benoni, South Africa) won, 3-1, in the No. 3 match for the other Bulldog point.
"We are back on track but the journey is very, very long," said Trinity Head Coach Paul Assaiante. "Last season, we defeated Princeton, 7-2, at home last year and then lost to them on their courts, 5-4, in the National Finals. This year, the Nationals are at Yale."
