NORTHAMPTON, Mass. —
Ethan Wilkie (Ellington, Conn.) and
Kai Bailin (Shutesbury, Mass.) welcome new personal bests in the Trinity College men's track & field season opener at the Mary Grinaker Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. In the weight throw, Wilkie heaved the weight 15.82m to break the school record set by former Bantam Alvin Chon in 2004 with a 15.54 toss for the top spot in the event. The junior secured his second first place in field events with 15.07m throw in the shotput, which was 3.08 meters further than Keene State's second-place finisher Kyle Murca's 11.99m throw. Bailin sprinted his best time in the 60m dash prelims with a 7.00 second run to earn the top qualifying spot in the first heat, while teammate
Terrence Bogan (Wallingford, Conn.) finished the prelim dash in 7.25 seconds to take the top spot in the next heat and earned the third qualifying place. Following the prelims, Bailin stepped up in the finals to beat his personal record set earlier by 0.04 seconds for the crown with a time of 6.96, along with Bogan who also ran a better time of 7.18 for third place for a personal best.
In the men's one mile run,
Finn McCole (Saten Island, N.Y.) placed second in his last collegiate race and was 7.94 seconds behind first-place finisher Jon Hendley from Castleton University, who clocked in at 4:46.15. All four Trinity runners in the 400m dash placed in the top five as
Nolan McKenna (Boston, Mass.) claims the top spot with a time of 51.73 seconds, followed closely by
Charlie Ducret (Old Greenwich, Conn.) who crossed the finish line for second. In fourth and fifth place came
Jack Darling (Milton, Mass.) and
Pedro Mateo (Immokalee, Fla.) with times of 56.24 and 56.83, respectively.
In the fourth heat for the 200m dash, Bailin and McKenna came in first and second to secure the top two spots overall with times of 22.41 and 23.30, respectively, while Ducret finished third in the heat to earn fifth overall with a time of 24.01. In the second heat, Mateo finished at the top with a run of 25.07 and placed ninth overall, while
William Addison (Falmouth, Maine) came in second in the third heat to snag fourth overall as the first-year clocked in at 23.85. First-year
Evan Farnan (East Greenbush, N.Y.) crossed the line first in the second heat of the 800 meter run and placed second overall.
As the lone Bantam runner at the Boston University season opener,
Travis Martin (New Haven, Conn.) snapped the 3,000 meter school record with a time of 8:11.91, which was set by Patrick Hoagland in 2017, who clocked in at 8:16.68. The senior standout placed 19th overall among some of the top Division I runners in the country and the top Division III finisher.
Trinity has a long break and will return after the New Year for the Massassoit Classic hosted by Springfield College on January 21.
