Trinity Softball Swept by No. 8 ECSU in Home Opener

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College softball team was swept in its home opener by No. 8-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU), 9-0 and 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Trinity Softball Field. The Bantams slide to 5-6 while ECSU improves to 15-3 and Head Coach Diana Pepin picked up her 500th Career win for the Warriors. Trinity returns home this Friday for its "Pride Game" against Bates College at 4 p.m followed by a Saturday double-header against the Bobcats. Meanwhile, ECSU takes on the University of Southern Maine in a Saturday double header in Mansfield, Conn. 
 
The Warriors recorded 11 hits in game one and recorded five of its nine runs during the sixth inning. Cassie Woods went 2-for-3 while Brooke Matyasovs, Julia SanGiovan and Sophia Vilchez each tallied two RBIs apiece. Alexis Michon pitched a six-inning shutout with four strikeouts and just three hits.
 
The Bantams scored the first two runs of the day's second game during in the bottom of the first. Senior Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.) knocked a base hit into center field and an error on the throw to home allowed junior Michaela Russel to score while Keary advanced to third. In the very next at-bat senior Alex Chambers grounded out to short but Keary was able to score on the throw to first to give the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead. 
 
The Bantams held a two run lead for three innings but the Warriors would later answer with two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and another in the seventh. Cassie Woods again went two-for-three at the plate along with teammate Alexis Tyrell. Sophomore Kennedy Rogers (Pomona, Calif.) went two-for-three while Gianna Tito (East Hanover, N.J.), Tiffany Stowers, (Burke, Va.) Alyssa Gazivoda (Poughquah, N.Y.) and Keary all recorded hits for the Bantams.
