Trinity Cross Country And Track And Field Rounds Out Coaching Staff

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College men's and women's cross country and track and field programs welcome Takashi Gould and Maia Rumsey as new assistant coaches heading into the 2022-23 seasons. Gould brings over a decade of coaching experience to the staff, while Rumsey has three years of expertise under her belt.  Gould will work closely with cross country and the Trinity distance runners, following the retirement of George Suitor as head cross country coach in June, and Rumsey will work predominantly with track and field. Trinity cross country, coached by John Michael Mason who also coaches the Bantam track and field squads, opens the 2022 season on Saturday, September 10 at Smith College.

For the last two seasons, Gould spent time at the University of Massachusetts, where he assisted with the men's and women's track and field teams. Gould worked the first season as the volunteer assistant coach before rising to the director of operations for the Minutemen track and field programs.  Gould helped bring notoriety to UMass with 19 individual scorers across the Atlantic10 Outdoor and Indoor Championships in 2021 and 2022.  Gould began his high school coaching career in 2011 and most recently was the head coach for the DeWitt High School girl's track and field team in Michigan in the spring of 2020. There he coached 2021 Cross Country Big Ten Freshman of the Year Kaitlyn Hynes, who currently runs for Michigan State University.  Gould graduated from Eastern Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Japanese Language and Culture and ran cross country and track.

Rumsey earned her bachelor's from Ithaca College in 2018 and became a graduate assistant track coach at her alma mater while working toward her master's degree in exercise and sports sciences degree — which she is expected to complete in December.  After Ithaca, Rumsey coached varsity track at Frostburg State in the spring semester of 2022. At Frostburg, she provided instruction in sprint, hurdle and relay techniques, where she qualified 13 student-athletes in the sprint and hurdle groups for the Mountain East Conference Championship meet.
