Trinity Topples Springfield College, 8-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Trinity College men's tennis team sweeps the singles competition at Springfield College as Kartik Erodula (Hamden, Conn.) and Pierce Rutledge (Chicago, Ill.) both overcome a first set loss at No. 5 and 6, respectively, for the match point in the 8-1 victory on Wednesday. Trinity improved to 4-5 on the season, while the Pride fell to 7-6. The Bantams face New England Small College Athletic Conference foe Williams College on the road at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Three singles bouts went the distance, with the Navy & Gold coming up in all three of them as Trinity was able to capture all six singles points. At No. 6 Ethan Gomuika took the first set for Springfield, 7-6, but then was topped by Rutledge with a 6-1, 10-4 margin, while the Pride's Waseem Sablon also won the first set at No. 5, 6-2, only to have been edged by Erodula (6-3, 6-1). 

Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion (Lima, Peru) sealed the first set with a 6-1 win before dropping the second 6-4, but the junior captain clipped Phakin Thongboonchareon by a 6-3 score in the third. Jack Ginter (Pheonixville, Pa.) fought a tough singles match with Marc Villanueva Abad in a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker second set for the victory after taking a 6-1 win the in the first.
