Men's Track & Field Finishes Third at Silfen Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. — After the two-day Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College, the Trinity College men's track & field team placed third out of the 20 competing teams with 84 points across the 22 scored events on Saturday. Springfield College topped the team scoring with 152 points, while the Camels earned second with 92. Trinity hosts its home Invitational on April 22 at 10 a.m. on Jesse/Miller Field.

Senior Kai Bailin (Shutesbury, Mass.) had a strong meet after a 110m hurdles debut with a time of 15.80 to finish fourth overall and came out on top in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.58, where one clipped hurdle potentially kept the sprinter from another personal record. Jack Darling (Milton, Mass.) placed sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.47, while Toby L'Esperance (Florence, Mass.) clocked in third in the 1500m with a time of 3:57.64. In the 200m, Nolan McKenna (Boston, Mass.) placed second with a time of 22.53, with first-year Zuri Johnson (Powder Springs, Ga.) four paces behind with a time of 22.61.

Ethan Wilkie (Ellington, Conn.) earned a pair of second-place finishes on the the hammer and shot put with 50.10m and 16.45m throws, respectively. Rookie Emmanuele Chiappinelli III (Milton, Vt.) secured first place in the decathlon discus with a 35.61m heave, 6.86m further than second-place finisher Aidan Hennessey from Eastern Connecticut State University. Chiappinelli III finished third in the decathlon javelin with a 39.32m toss, while Andrew Moran (Mendham, N.J.) threw the javelin 48.26m for a seventh-place finish.

The team opened the first day with a first-place finish by Sam Strymish (Newton, Mass.) in the 5000m with a time of 14.49.02, while Travis Martin (New Haven, Conn.) clocked in at eighth place for a school breaking record and a personal best in the 1500m at Princeton University's Larry Ellis Invitational with a time of 3:44.16 on Friday, the senior currently sits at No. 1 in the country. Trinity sat at sixth with eight points after a trio of scoring events and resumed action at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

In the discus on the opening day, Wilkie earned second with a 44.35m throw. Chiappinelli III finished fourth in the decathlon shot put with a throw of 9.64m, while Larson Sippel (Northhampton, Mass.) clocked in sixth with a time of 1:56.54 in the 800m.
