Trinity Student-Athletes Recieve Prestigious Honors at Annual Atheltic Awards Ceremony

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College celebrated the outstanding achievements of several students and staff members at its annual Trinity Athletic Awards reception on Monday, April 29th, held in Ray Oosting Gymnasium. The event highlighted eleven prestigious awards presented each year by the athletic department, including the Bantam Award, Larry Silver Award, Anne Parmenter Award, Robert R. Bartlett Award, ECAC Award, Susan E. Martin Award, The George Sheldon McCook Trophy, Trinity Club of Hartford Trophy, along with the newly introduced Team Liaison Award and Bantam Cup.

The George Sheldon McCook Trophy and Trinity Club of Hartford Trophy, the college's top athletic distinctions, are awarded annually to outstanding senior athletes based on their performance in athletics, scholastic standing, and sportsmanship. 

Mohamed Sharaf, a member of the Men's Squash team from Shiekh Zayed City, Egypt, received the George Sheldon McCook Trophy. He was a two-time College Squash Association All-America, two-time NESCAC Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-NESCAC selection. He won the 2023 CSA Individual National Championship.

Reilly Campbell, a member of the Women's Basketball team from Wallingford, Conn., was honored with the Trinity Club of Hartford Award. Campbell led the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, a NESCAC regular season title in 2022, and a run to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2023. She was a two-time All-America, a two time First Team All-NESCAC selection, and earned 2024 Academic All-District® honors, as selected by College Sports Communicators. 

The evening began with the presentation of the Bantam Award, an accolade donated to the College by Raymond A. Montgomery, Class of 1925. This award honors a non-student who has made a significant contribution to Trinity's sports program. The 2024 Bantam Award was bestowed upon Emma Zaleski, Assistant AD of Game and Event Operations.

The Larry Silver Award, named in memory of Lawrence Silver, Class of '64, recognizes a student who has made notable contributions to Trinity's athletic program as a non-player. This year's recipient of the Larry Silver Award is athletic department student worker Aleem Ogunsanya '26.

In the Trinity College athletic department, each of the 30 varsity sports has a designated team liaison. The Team Liaison Award acknowledges individuals who establish and foster direct relationships between athletes and the college's faculty. Professor of Physics and Environmental Science Christoph Geiss was honored as the Team Liaison of the Year for his outstanding advocacy and support.

The Anne L. Parmenter Award, named after beloved coach and mentor Anne Parmenter, honors a student-athlete who promotes diversity, equity, and social justice on campus through activism and leadership. This year's recipient is Maya Carnes, a sophomore and member of the Women's Basketball team.

The Robert R. Bartlett Awards, established in 1992, recognize members of men's and women's teams who excel in athletics while demonstrating dedication to community or campus service. The 2024 Robert R. Bartlett Award recipients are Gerard Marretta from Men's Ice Hockey and Gabby Grattan from Women's Track & Field and Women's Soccer.

Trinity College men's soccer senior Benny Simoes was awarded the Eastern College Athletic Conference "Outstanding Scholar-Athlete" Award for his remarkable achievements in athletics and academics.

The Susan E. Martin "Outstanding Student-Athlete'' Award, established in honor of Suzie Martin '71, recognizes a senior woman athlete who excels both in sports and academics. This year's recipient is Sophia Jones from the Women's Track and Field team.

Finally, the inaugural Bantam Cup was presented to the team that best demonstrated a combination of athletic excellence, academic success, career development, community engagement, and Bantam spirit throughout the academic year. Among several notable contenders, Women's Basketball emerged as the winner of the inaugural Bantam Cup for their exceptional dedication and achievements across all aspects of college life.
