Softball Splits Pair at Eastern Connecticut State

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Trinity College Softball team overcame a 3-0 loss in the opener to capture a 9-2 victory over host Eastern Connecticut State in a non-conference doubleheader at Clyde Washburne Field Thursday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 6-4 overall, while the Warriors move to 7-5 on the season.
 
What Happened:
  • In game one, the Bantams looked to break open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to bring anyone home, leaving the game at 0-0.
  • The Warriors plated the decisive runs in the bottom of the fifth as Grace Jenkins dropped an RBI bunt, followed by an RBI sac fly from Lily Kenefick and an RBI double from Julia Boya en route to the 3-0 victory.
  • In the nightcap, Trinity struck first with Abigail Alper scoring on an RBI single from Katie Ruffer, and then Ashleigh Lent belted a two-run single to left field, handing the Bantams a 3-0 lead.
  • Eastern Connecticut cut the deficit to 3-1 on an RBI groundout from Kaley Laird. Trinity responded in the top of the second behind an RBI single from Kellie Schroffner to regain a 4-1 advantage.
  • Lent remained hot at the dish, ripping a two-run double to center, extending the lead to 6-1. Holding a 6-2 edge in the sixth, the Bantams put the game away with RBI knocks from Isabella Calagna, Ruffer and Makenna True to send Trinity to the 9-2 win.
 
Inside the Boxscore:
  • The Bantams registered seven hits in the opener, and then plated nine runs on 14 hits.
  • Eastern Connecticut recorded three runs on five hits in game one, and two runs on five hits in the nightcap.
  • Goddard tallied four hits with two runs scored and a stolen base, while True and Schroffner added three hits, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base each.
  • Lent drove in four runs on two hits, Ruffer went 3-for-8 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Calagna, O'Brien, and Alper tacked on two hits apiece.
  • In the pitching circle, Kaysen Shikar (2-3) took the loss in the opener, allowing three runs, all unearned, on five hits with three strikeouts. Erin Connor (2-0) picked up the victory in game two, firing a complete game with two runs, one earned, and four strikeouts.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will be back on the diamond when they open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play with a doubleheader against Hamilton College (0-0) at Trinity College Softball Field on Saturday, March 28 at 12:00 p.m.
  • Trinity has won four of the last seven meetings against the Continentals, including a split last season.
