Kevin MacDermott returns for his 15th season as head coach of Trinity College men's rowing in 2023-24, after leading the Bantams to a bronze medal at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Division III Championships in 2022 and 2023. Trinity was 6-2 in dual racing, placed seventh at the New England Championship Regatta, and sixth (4th among New England Small College Athletic Conference teams) in the NIRC Championship Regatta in 2023. Last spring, Trinity was fourth in the NESCAC and competed at the IRA Championships and in 2022 the Bantams secured the Bronze at the IRA Championships. In 2021, the Bantams were second in the NESCAC Regional and competed in the IRA Championships. The Bantams were also second in the 2019 NESCAC Championships and Trinity's varsity eight was the second-fastest Division III boat in the Head of the Charles Regatta (11th overall).
He is also an instructor in Trinity's physical education department, and hosts the College's "Faculty Feature Podcast" at various times during each semester. He is also responsible for the Friends of Trinity Rowing Boathouse.
In 2015, MacDermott's charges posted a 7-0 dual-race record and medaled at both championship regattas. In 2014, the Bantams recorded top-five finishes in each eights category to take the New England Rowing Championships Combined Men's and Women's Overall Points Trophy title and place second in the Men's and Women's Combined Overall Points Trophy Standings in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Collegiate Regatta. Trinity was 11-0 in dual racing and won the New England Championship title in 2013, and MacDermott was honored as the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
The Bantams captured their 10th consecutive New England Overall Points title, and the ECAC Men's and Women's Overall Points crown that year, and MacDermott guided Trinity to the second round at the Henley Royal Regatta that summer. In both 2010 and 2012, Trinity won the Overall Points title in the New England and ECAC events, and its varsity eight finished second in both championships, its second varsity was undefeated in dual-racing and raced to open-water victories at the 2010 ECAC and NERC Championships, and the varsity eight won the Cal Cup at the 2010 San Diego Crew Classic.
Before assuming the head coach role, MacDermott served as Trinity's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for three years, working under legendary coach Larry Gluckman. He helped guide crews to two open-water NERC victories while coaching the first-years and coached three crews (4-, 4+, and 2-) during Trinity's 2008 trip to Henley Royal Regatta. Before coming to Trinity, he worked for four years as assistant coach of men's rowing at his alma mater, Wesleyan University. In 2011, MacDermott was tapped to lead the USRowing Junior National Rowing Team.
MacDermott serves as senior associate director of the Craftsbury Sculling Center in Craftsbury, Vt. He has been a head coach at the Center since 2004 and first began coaching at CSC in 2002. MacDermott and his wife, Janel, live in West Hartford, Conn. with their two children.
