Box Score New London, Conn. - Junior Keriann Mason had 13 kills and 14 digs and sophomore Kelsey DePorto also had 13 kills to lead the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears to a 3-1 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in volleyball action this evening. Trinity, tied for the No. 10 ranking in New England falls to 13-6 with its third defeat in a row, while the Bears, ranked No. 6 in New England improve to 19-5 with their fifth victory in a row.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening game, took its largest lead of the game 16-8, and scored six of the final eight points for a 25-16 win. Trinity evened things up in the second game as the Bantams took an early lead, extended that advantage to 11-6, and took their largest lead of the game, 22-15, moments later. Coast Guard made a late game surge by scoring five of the next six points to pull to within 23-20 before Trinity won it 25-21.
The Bears led, 10-5, in the third game before the Bantams stormed back to tie it 12-12. It was a back-and-forth game that was later tied at 21-21 when Coast Guard scored four of the final five points for a 25-22 win. In the fourth game, Coast Guard broke an 8-8 tie with an 8-3 run to take a 16-11 lead and closed out the match with a 25-18 win.
Junior OH Danielle Isaman (West Hartford, Conn.) led Trinity with 12 kills while sophomore OH Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) finished with nine kills. Senior L Sarah Blagden (Charleston, S.C.) had a match-high 32 digs for the Bantams while senior S Jennifer Low (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with a match-high 32 assists for Trinity. Freshman Kelsey Hickle added 12 kills and four aces while sophomore Sam Marmolejo had a team-high 21 digs in the win for Coast Guard.
