Middletown, Conn. -- The Trinity College Bantams, behind a pair
of goals from junior Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.), rolled to a
4-1 victory over the Assumption College Greyhounds in men's ice
hockey action thisy afternoon at Wesleyan University. The game was
the first of a double-header as part of a four-team event that also
includes Wesleyan and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Two
more games will be played Sunday at Trinity. Assumption fell to
4-4-1 with the loss, while Trinity picked up its first win of the
season and the first in the career of Head Coach Matthew Greason,
and now stands 1-2.
After a scoreless first period, Trinity junior Jordan So
(Toronto, Ontario) opened the scoring 1:22 into the second period.
So fired a backhanded shot from the left side over the shoulder of
Assumption senior netminder Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla.) for his
first goal, with junior Zachary Lombardi (Locust Valley, N.Y.)
picking up an assist on the tally.
Trinity extended its advantage to 3-0 with a pair of goals in a
nine-second span. Menard found the back of the net at 3:33 for his
first goal following a pass from twin brother Jeffrey Menard
(Burlington, Mass.), and the duo repeated the feat just nine
seconds later. After Trinity won the center-ice faceoff, Jeffrey
Menard found Chris Menard for a fast-break tally at 3:42.
Trinity increased its lead to 4-0 at the 5:16 mark of the
third period. Senior Paul Jaskot (Methuen, Mass.) put a rebound
past Blanchette for his first goal, with assists going to sophomore
Charlie Mullan (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior Joe Tierney (Reading,
Mass.).
Assumption concluded the scoring at 12:12 in the third.
Sophomore Mike Heyde (Natick, Mass.) passed the puck to sophomore
Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I.) on the left side, and Mattiello
sent a one-timer past Trinity sophomore goaltender Benjamin
Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.) for his team-leading sixth
goal. Coulthard finished with 24 stops for Trinity.
Blanchette recorded 41 saves in the Assumption net, 17 of which
came in the first stanza as the Bantams held a 17-8 edge in shots
in the period. Both teams hit the ice again tomorrow at
Trinity's Koeppel Center, as Assumption takes on Wesleyan at 1
p.m., followed by Trinity-Wentworth at 4 p.m.
