Box Score Middletown, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams remained undefeated with a 3-0 victory over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs on the second day of a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball weekend at Wesleyan University. Trinity improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC, while the Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 8 in New England, drops to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Bantams are off to the best start in the program's history.
Trinity made relatively short work of the first and third sets, winning both comfortably by counts of 25-13 and 25-14, respectively. The Bantams pulled away from an 8-8 deadlock in the opener with a 13-3 run for a 22-11 edge before closing it out. The third set found Trinity pulling away early, 6-0, then upping the margin to 13-4. The gap never fell below six points and reached its peak at 22-9. The second set was a battle as Amherst led at the start, 7-3, but was tied, 17-17, going into the home stretch. Amherst ran off seven of the next 10 points for a 24-20 lead, but Trinity saved seven set points, four to make it 24-24, with the 24th point coming on a dink by sophomore OH Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.), who led the Bantams with 17 kills. Amherst led, 25-24, before Trinity again knotted the score and then got its first set-point chance, only to have the Lord Jeffs counter for a 26-26 score. Amherst had leads of 27-26 and 28-27, but Trinity tied it each time. An Amherst error put Trinity ahead for good at 29-28, and a two-handed push to an open middle of the court by Brickley put the cap on the second set.
Along with Brickley, junior OH Danielle Isaman (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up double-digit kills for Trinity with 14. Senior co-captain S Jennifer Low (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up 31 assists before taking a rest for the latter stage of the third set. Low and Brickley also had 16 and 15 digs, respectively, but were nearly equaled in total by senior libero Sarah Blagden (Charleston, S.C.), who collected 30 digs in the match. Amherst libero junior Kristin Keeno also had a 30-dig performance. Senior Mary Reiser led the Lord Jeffs in both kills (7) and blocks (3) while junior Callie Neilson had 23 assists.
