Box Score Northampton, Mass. - The Smith College Pioneers defeated
the Trinity College Bantams for the first time in 10
years, 68-47, this afternoon in women's basketball
action. Trinity drops to 5-3 with their first loss in three
games, while improves to 7-1 with their fifth victory in a
row.
Trinity was led by junior forward Taylor Murtaugh (New York,
N.Y.) and Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.), who each scored 10
points, while Hanniford and rookie Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford,
Conn.) added seven rebounds apiece. Paulina Solis led Smith
with 17 points, six rebounds, and six steals while Devon
Quattrocchi and Rosa Drummond each chipped in 12 points.
Trinity committed 29 turnovers, shot 35.8 percent from the field,
and missed nine free throws in 18 tries.
Quattrocchi drained a three-pointer that broke a 7-7 tie
and gave Smith the lead for good at the 14:18 mark of the first
half. Smith went on an 18-7 run over the next eight minutes,
culminated by a three pointer from Drummond with 6:15 to play in
the first half that gave Smith an 11-point advantage (28-17).
Smith led by as many as 12 on Marissa Munoz-Ruiz' free throw before
taking a 37-27 lead into halftime. The game remained a
double-digit affair throughout the second half.
