Box Score Coulthard Makes 47 Saves in Bantam Goal
Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore goaltender Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.) turned away 47 shots to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a decisive 3-1 victory over the visiting Williams College Ephs in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this evening on Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Trinity improves to 8-8-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the NESCAC and snaps a three-game losing streak against the Ephs. No. 14-ranked Williams falls to 10-4-5 and extends its winless streak to three games.
Both Coulthard and Williams freshman goalie Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) were peppered with shots in the first period, and both successfully kept the puck out of the net until Trinity senior forward Sean McCarthy (Duxbury, Mass.) beat Dougherty with a wrist shot while streaking down the left wing during a Bantam power play with 1:14 left in the first period. Trinity actually outshot Williams, 16-14, in the first period but the Ephs held a 33-to-15 edge over the last 40 minutes.
Trinity junior forward Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.) poked in a rebound at 14:07 of the second frame after an initial shot by classmate Jordan So (Toronto, Ontario) to give the home team a 2-0 lead that held into the final break. Williams picked up its offensive intensity after a time out late in the third period, totaling 21 shots in the final stanza, and finally broke its scoring drought on a blast by senior defenseman Justin Troiani (Woodbridge, Ontario) from the point with its goalie pulled and 1:29 on the clock. Twenty seconds later, Bantam junior forward Zachary Lombardi (Locust Valley, N.Y.) iced the game with a shot off the boards that traveled the full length of the ice before coasting into the empty Williams net. Dougherty finished with 28 saves. Lombardi assisted McCarthy on the game's first goal to total two points.
