Waltham, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams downed the
Brandeis University Judges, 6-3, in women's tennis action this
afternoon for its second straight road victory over a top-25
team. The Bantams improve to 9-4, while the No. 20-ranked
Judges fall to 13-4.
The Judges and Bantams split the first two doubles matches,
before Trinity gained momentum with a late break of serve to give
sophomores Regan Cherna (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Gerber
(Bethesda, Md.) a 9-7 victory over Brandeis rookies Dylan
Schlesinger (Miami, Fla) and Simone Vandross (Moss Valley,
Calif.).
Trinity carried the momentum into singles action. At the top two
spots, Bantam junior Hillary Hoyt (New York, N.Y.) and
sophomore Senzo Mauve-Maphisa (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) each won in
straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Brandeis
fought back with consecutive singles wins to close the gap to 4-3,
but Trinity took the final two matches with a pair of
tiebreakers in the second set, as senior captain Kelsey Semrod
(Princeton, N.J.) won, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 4 and Gerber won, 6-3,
7-6 (7-2) at No. 5.
