Hartford, Conn. –Senior tri-captain MH Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) notched 11 kills, six digs, and three blocks to lead the visiting University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacons to a 3-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in volleyball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity falls to 5-2 with its second loss in a row, while the Beacons, ranked No. 4 in New England, improve to 7-4 with their third win in a row.
"Mass.-Boston has a great squad and early on I thought we had a chance to really test them," said Trinity Head Coach Jen Bowman. "As the match went on, UMAss just got better and better. They are a tough team to stop and we struggled tonight. I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym in preparation for Amherst."
Despite trailing, 12-3, early, Trinity won the first set, 26-24, as first-year Katie Stueber (Darien, Conn.) teamed with classmate Tori Larson (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) on a block and followed that point with the clinching kill for the last two points of the set. Mass.-Boston never trailed the rest of the way, however, taking the final three sets, 25-15, 25-16, and, 25-8.
Junior OH Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) paced the Bantams with 11 kills against just one error for a .303 hitting percentage in the match, and added a team-high 13 digs. Junior S Amy Hackett (Wallingford, Conn.) had a team-high 14 assists, senior co-captain OH Dani Isaman (West Hartford, Conn.) contributed seven kills, two aces, and 13 digs, and first-year MH Kate Giddens (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) recorded seven kills and three blocks. Beacon senior tri-captain L Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) posted a game-high 23 digs, and junior tri-captain OH Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, Calif.) had seven kills and four blocks.
