University-Florham Red Devils advanced to the finals of the Sig
Makofski Men's Basketball Tournament at Union College's
Viniar Athletic Center this evening with a 74-63 victory over the
Trinity College Bantams. Trinity falls to 3-2 and will play
in the consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the loser of
tonight's Union/Cobleskill State game. The Red Devils
improve to 2-3 and will play the winner of tonight's game in
the tourney finals tomorrow.
Trinity led, 20-11, 8:35 into the game but a
25-9 run by FDU-Florham put the Bantams behind, 36-29, with one
minute left before halftime. A layup by Trinity sophomore
guard Jaquann Starks (Hartford, Conn.) and an old-school
three-point play by junior forward Alex Conaway (New Haven, Conn.)
in the final minute made the score, 36-34, at the break.
Trinity first-year forward Ed Ogundeko
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored four of the first six points of the second
half, as the Bantams went ahead, 40-26, but back-to-back baskets by
FDU-Florham's Will Green (Cranford, N.J.) and John Flete
(Flemington, N.J.) tied it back up at 40-40 with 17:16 on the
clock. Trinity took its final lead, 56-54, on a put-back by
junior co-captain center George Papadeas (Athens, Greece) with 6:58
left to play, but Flete answered with six points in a row for a
60-56 Red Devil advantage at the five-minute mark.
FDU-Florham held Trinity to just three field goals in the final
five minutes and made all 10 of its free throw attempts down the
stretch.
Trinity outrebounded FDU-Florham, 40-32, but
missed nine of its 11 shots from long range and eight of its 21
free throws while committing 21 turnovers. Starks paced
Trinity with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three
steals, while Ogundeko added 11 points, seven boards, three blocks,
and two steals, and Papadeas had a team-high nine rebounds to go
with two blocks and seven points. Flete and Kevin Furlong
(Hazlet, N.J.) had 20 points apiece for FDU-Florham, while Furlong
also grabbed eight boards and dished out three assists with two
steals. Green totaled 16 points, a game-high 11 rebounds,
three assists, and two steals, and Trevor Sykes (Staten Island,
N.J.) added 12 points and six rebounds for the Red Devils.
