Northampton, Mass. - The Trinity College volleyball team lost to Westfield State, 3-1, on Friday evening in their first of three games at the Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by Smith College. The Bantams won the first set 25-12 before falling 27-25, 25-22, and 25-16 in three straight sets. The loss drops Trinity to 7-11 on the year while Westfield State improves to 12-12 overall. 

Trinity was paced offensively by seniors Kate Giddens (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Hunter Drews (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who tallied 12 and nine kills, respectively. Sophomore Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.) led all players with six service aces while junior teammate Shelby Deck (Newport Beach, Calif.) added four of her own as well as accounting for 25 of Trinity's 31 assists. Freshmen Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) combined for 21 digs with 11 and 10, respectively. 

The Owls were led by Kendyl Haney (Ashland, Mass.) who led Westfield State, along with teammate Shannon Shea (Chelmsford, Mass.), with 10 kills each. Courtney Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) had a good evening, recording three service aces to go along with her game-high 28 assists. Shea, Ryan, and Lizzie Taylor (Medfield, Mass.) combined for 44 digs as the Owls totaled 65 on the evening. 

Trinity is back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. when they play Springfield before facing Brandeis at 2 p.m. in their second game of the day. Both games are being played at Smith College.
