Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Senior tri-captain forward Annika Nygren (Sudbury, Mass.) scored four times to lead the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 5-1 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey regular-season finale for both teams this evening in a steady downpour on Sheppard Field this afternoon. Trinity completes the regular slate with an 8-7 record and a 4-6 mark in the NESCAC, while No. 16-ranked Amherst finishes at 11-4 overall and 6-4 in the league with its fourth consecutive victory. Trinity will open post-season play in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at No. 15-ranked Tufts on Saturday, while the Lord Jeffs host No. 20-ranked Williams in the league quarters Saturday.
Nygren got Amherst off to a 3-0 lead before the break with a first-half hat trick, including the first goal 13:06 into the contest on a rebound after Trinity senior tri-captain Sophie Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.) had saved a shot by Lord Jeff junior forward Sara Culhane (Princeton, N.J.). Culhane added an assist on Nygren's third goal with 4:19 left in the opening stanza. Trinity held a 7-6 shooting edge at halftime, but Lord Jeff junior backstop Emily Horwitz (Wilmington, Del.) made five of her six saves in the first 35 minutes of play.
Junior forward Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) got the Bantams on the board 15:15 into the second half, redirecting a shot from the left by sophomore forward Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.). Nygren pushed the visitors' lead back to three with an unassisted goal less than six minutes later, and a penalty stroke conversion by Amherst sophomore back Caroline Fiore (Essex Falls, N.J.) in the 63rd minute rounded out the scoring. Fitzpatrick totaled eight saves in the Trinity cage.
