Trinity Volleyball Sweeps Smith on Dig Pink Night

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College volleyball team defeated the Smith College Pioneers on Tuesday night in Hartford for the squad's annual Dig Pink Fundraiser game. Trinity improves to 6-7 on the season while Smith falls to 4-13. The Bantams donned pink jerseys in part of the fundraiser that raises awareness for breast cancer.

Trinity got out to a quick 10-5 lead in the first set that caused Smith to call a timeout to regroup. Out of the timeout, the Bantams continued their strong play, and after an ace by Grace Metry (Grasse Point Park, Mich.), the Pioneers called another timeout down 14-6. Smith cut into the lead after a couple of unforced Bantams errors however Trinity's offensive attack was too much, as the home team took set one, 25-13.

Watch this powerful spike by the Bant's in the first set.

In set two, Smith found themselves up 6-1 before Trinity scored five straight points to come back and take the lead. With Trinity up 15-11, Smith took a timeout to try and slow the Bantams' momentum, but to no avail, as Trinity finished the set on a 10-4 run to take a 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Trinity flew out of the gates, scoring eight unanswered points to take an early lead. The Bantams advantage was insurmountable for the Pioneers as they won the set 25-15, sweeping the match.

Seniors Kate Giddens (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Gina Buzzelli (Chesire, Conn.) led the way for the Bantams, fresh off of surpassing 1,000 kills and 1,000 assists, respectively, last weekend. Giddens led all players with 15 kills on 27 attacks while Buzzelli paced the offense with 21 assists to go along with her 10 digs. Sophomore Anne Hay (New York, N.Y.) tallied four aces in the third and only set she played tonight, while Metry complimented Buzzelli's 10 digs with 11 of her own. Senior Katie Stueber (Darien, Conn.) led all players with a .556 kill percentage, tallying five on nine shots.

For the Pioneers, Macarena Rojas (Maipu, Santiago, Chile) led the team with two aces and 10 digs while teammate Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn.) tallied six kills.

The Bantams take the road this weekend as they travel up to Brunswick, Maine on Friday, Oct. 9, to take on New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent Bowdoin, followed by a trip to Boston the following day to face Emerson.
