Box Score Brooklyn, N.Y. - Senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) had 27 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 80-46 victory over the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels in the opening round of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Women's Basketball Tournament at Medgar Evers College this evening. Trinity improves to 3-0 and will play the winner of tonight's contest between the host Medgar Evers Cougars and the Eastern Nazarene College Lions in tomorrow's finals at 3 p.m.
Trinity scored the first eight points of the game and led, 36-27, at halftime. A layup by Griffin gave Trinity a 20-9 lead with 9:04 left in the second quarter, and Aaliyah Fields brought the Blue Angels to within four at 31-27 with 1:40 remaining before halftime with a three-pointer. Trinity junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) scored three of the last five points before intermission, as the Bantams used a 5-0 run to push their back to 36-27.
Griffin opened the third quarter with a layup and senior captain guard Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) drilled a three-pointer to open up a 41-27 lead, and Trinity extended its advantage to 30 at 73-43 on a layup by sophomore forward Emily Llerena (New Milford, Conn.) with just under six minutes left to play. Landy finished with 15 points, three rebounds, five assists, and three steals, senior captain guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) scored 10 points, and Menard notched nine points and six assists for the Bantams.
