Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Stalls Against Salve Regina At Home

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Junior defenseman Nick Owen (Methuen, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the third period and added a pair of assists to lead the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks to a 6-4 victory over the top-ranked Trinity College Bantams in men's ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Trinity falls to 3-1 with its first loss in eight games and its first-ever loss to Salve Regina in the four-game history of the series.  The Seahawks collect their fourth triumph in a row to even their season mark at 4-1-1.

Trinity scored twice early in the third period to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 4-4 stalemate on goals by sophomores Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Griffyn Martin (Southport, Conn.), but Owen netted the game-winner from sophomore forward Joseph Yeadon (Burlington, Mass.) with a slapshot from above the left face-off circle with 8:02 left on the clock.  A Bantam penalty at the 17:48 mark prevented Trinity from pulling senior goalie Nathaniel Heilbron (West Vancouver, British Columbia) until 40 seconds were left in the game, and Seahawk senior defenseman Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) secured the game for the visitors with an empty-netter 22 seconds later.

Coming off a 7-1 win over Stonehill yesterday, Trinity stayed hot early when senior captain forward Elie Vered (Ottawa, Ontario) one-timed in a pass from the left wing by junior forward Ethan Holdaway (Glastonbury, Conn.) 31 seconds into the game.  Trinity managed just six more shots the rest of the period, while Heilbron stymied the Seahawks on each of their 11 shots in the opening stanza.  Salve Regina senior captain Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) scored power-play goals twice in less than two minutes, both on assists by Owen, to put the Seahawks ahead, 2-1, with 12:45 left before the second break, but Trinity junior forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.) answered with a short-handed tally at the 9:09 mark to tie the game at 2-2.  Junior forward Tom Evangelista (Methuen, Mass.) scored on a rebound of shot by senior forward Shaun Altshuller (Nepean, Ontario) 11:53 into the second frame, and rookie blueliner Kevin Clare (Chicago, Ill.) scored with 4:58 on the clock to give Salve Regina a 4-2 advantage after two periods.

Sabitsky and Martin both scored their third-period goals on assists by junior forward Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Alaska) and sophomore forward Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.), and Martin's game-tying shot 5:14 into the final stanza came directly off a Whitney pass from behind the net.  Salve Regina first-year backstop Blake Wotjala (Trenton, Mich.) made a key save on a Sabitsky one-timer from close in front moments later to keep the game tied, and Heilbron stonewalled Salve Regina senior forward Peter Gintoli (Shelton, Conn.) one-on-one with seven minutes left to keep Trinity within one goal after Salve Regina had pulled ahead.  Wotjala finished with 21 saves and Heilbron had 31, as the Seahawks finished with a 37-to-25 shooting advantage.  Trinity hurt themselves with 42 penalty minutes on nine infractions.
