Trinity Volleyball Upended At Hamilton

Clinton, N.Y. - Sophomore Giuliana Rankin smashed a match-high 13 kills to lead the Hamilton College Continentals to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.  Trinity falls to 6-10 overall and 0-8 in the NESCAC with its sixth loss in a row, while Hamilton (ups it season mark to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the league with its fourth consecutive victory.

The Continentals won, 25-17, in both the first and second sets. Trinity had a .170 to .044 hitting percentage over Hamilton in the third set to win 25-18, but the Continentals accumulated a match-high .333 hitting percentage to win the fourth set 25-11.  Bantam junior co-captain OH Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) had a team-high 12 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) added 11 kills and classmate Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) had 10. Trinity sophomore MH Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) had 14 digs and rookie S Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) delivered 31 assists.  Kyndal Burdin totaled 31 assists and 21 digs, while Christine Zizzi had a match-high 23 digs, and Rankin and Margaret O'Brien '18 each had five blocks for Hamilton.

The score was 6-6 in the first set when Self delivered back-to-back service aces to fuel a 14-to-5 Hamilton run. Trinity responded with three unanswered points, but Hamilton closed out the set.  Trinity started the third set with a 2-0 lead and developed a quick 8-4 advantage thanks in part to kills by senior MH Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Scheffers. Hamilton went on two separate runs to tie the game at 9-9 and again at 13-13, but Trinity avoided the sweep by outscoring Hamilton 12-4 to end set three.  Engstrom and Underwood made two kills each down the stretch in set three for the Bantams.  Hamilton scored eight unanswered for an 11-3 lead and followed with another 9-1 run to make the score, 20-4, in the fourth set. The Bantams added seven more points, including three on Underwood kills, but Courtney Brown '18 ended the game with her sixth kill of the match.
