Trinity Women's Basketball Holds Off St. Joseph For Third Straight Win

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - Junior forward Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore guard Peace Kabari (Manchester, N.H.) both poured in 15 points, including a combined 12 of the team's last 16, to lead the Trinity women's basketball team to a 67-54 victory over crosstown rival St. Joseph on Sunday afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford. The victory is Trinity's third in a row to begin the season while the Blue Jays fall to 3-2 on the year. Trinity returns to the floor on Tuesday for a 7:30 home game against Bard College while St. Joseph travels to Mitchell College on Wednesday to face the Mariners.

Kabari was everywhere for the Bantams, finishing with 15 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block, while shooting 50% from the floor. Erickson pulled down five boards and was 6-of-8 from the field while classmate Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) added 11 points on a 4-of-6 day. Junior guard Erica Junquet (Monroe, N.J.) finished with nine points and a game-high six assists while fellow junior guard Becky Reifler (Garden City, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Meghan Lewis (Demarest, N.J.) combined for eight points off the bench while Reifler pulled down five rebounds as well. St. Joseph was paced by Raelynn Voislow (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) who finished with 20 and 16 points, respectively. Voislow dished out four assists while Guest led the Blue Jays with seven rebounds. Despite shooting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, St. Joseph managed only a 36.8% mark from the floor and committed 21 turnovers on the day. The Bantams shot 46.8% from the field but also had their troubles with turnovers, giving it away 20 times.

Voislow and Guest both scored six points in the opening quarter but it was Trinity that found themselves ahead, 18-13 after the first 10 minutes of action despite a slow start. The Blue Jays went on a 7-0 run to open the game before a layup by Bantam senior tri-captain Emily Llerena (New Milford, Conn.) at the 5:59 mark ended Trinity's scoring drought. Trinity answered with an 8-3 run to tie things at 10-10 before Guest knocked down a three to reclaim a three-point lead which preceded a layup by Lewis to cut it to one. The Bantams finished the quarter on an 8-0 run, capped off by a great play by Junquet who scooped a layup into the basket and got mauled before sinking a free throw to make it an 18-13 game after one.

Both teams played an even, albeit sloppy, second quarter. The two sides combined for 16 turnovers in the second quarter as the Bantams took a 32-26 lead into halftime. Senior tri-captain guard Aubree Udell (Chester, N.J.) scored five points for the hosts in a quarter that saw them open up their largest lead of the game, 14 points, after a pair of free throws by Erickson with 6:42 to go. The Blue Jays responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 29-24 and eventually 32-26 which stood as the score at the half.

Cunningham scored seven of her 11 points in the third quarter as Trinity once again opened up a double-digit lead, this time 40-30, just under three minutes into the quarter. Back-to-back free throws by Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) followed by a Voislow layup at the 5:19 mark cut Trinity's lead back to three. Four quick points via buckets by Erickson and Kabari under a minute to go gave the Bantams a 48-40 advantage entering the game's final 10 minute stretch.

Trinity shot almost 57% from the field in the final quarter to propel them to the victory. Voislow scored the first basket of the quarter, a three-pointer to make it 48-43 Trinity, but Cunningham was having none of it and responded with a three-ball of her own at the other end of the floor. A jump shot by Shaniyah Williams (New Britain, Conn.) with 4:02 left to play once again made it a four-point game, but the Bantams proved too much for St. Joseph down the stretch. Consecutive layups by Kabari and Junquet opened up a nine-point advantage with 1:46 remaining before Erickson got a layup to fall on Trinity's next possession to make it a ten-point lead. The Blue Jays pushed the pace in the final minute but a pair of turnovers ended any chances of a comeback before buckets by Erickson and Reifler in the waning seconds of the game accounted for Trinity's 13-point victory.
