Box Score 2 Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore S Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) notched 85 assists in two matches to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a pair of wins in a volleyball tri-match this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium this afternoon. Trinity bested New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Hamilton, 3-1, and blanked non-conference foe Lesley, 3-0, to improve to 11-7 overall and 2-6 in the league. The Continentals also shut out Lesley, 3-0, to finish the day at 6-10 overall and 1-8 in the NESCAC, while the Lesley Lynx is now 4-14.
Trinity opened the Hamilton match with a 25-20 win in the first set. The Bantams went ahead, 2-1, on a kill by senior co-captain RS Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) and led the rest of the way. The Continentals took the second set, 25-17, leading wire-to-wire to tie the match at 1-1, but Trinity won, 25-20, in the third set and clinched the decision with a 25-19 in the fourth set. The home squad scored five of the set's final seven points to pull away in the third with senior co-captain OH Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.), junior MH Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.), and Yang providing kills down the stretch. In the fourth set, Hamilton led, 16-15, but the Bantams came up big late with six of the final seven points.
Underwood led all attackers with 17, including three at the end of the fourth set to put the match away, and added 16 digs, while Engstrom made 12 kills and junior OH Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) had 11 kills against Hamilton. Yang registered 53 assists with 15 digs, while both Underwood and Boughton served up a pair of aces. Junior Giuliana Rankin (San Diego, Calif.) had nine kills and a game-high six blocks, while sophomore Nikki Matsuoka (Honolulu, Hawaii) added 17 digs, and rookie Kendall Boxe (Leesburg, Va.) recorded five blocks for the Continentals.
Hamilton outscored the Lynx, 25-11, in each of the first two sets and, 25-10, in the third, while Trinity won, 25-10, in the first set, 25-12, in the second, and, 25-9, in the third against them. Boughton and first-year OH Hareena Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced Trinity with 10 kills each, while Johnson also had 10 digs and Boughton had a pair of blocks. Yang had 32 more assists, and junior L Ali Odermann (Lenexa, Kansas) notched 10 digs against the Lynx. Trinity totaled 15 aces, including four by Odermann and three by sophomore Becky Chu (Old Tappan, N.J.). Junior Cassidy Wygonik (Madison, Conn.) posted 11 digs and a block for Lesley against the Bantams.
