Box Score Northampton, Mass. - The Trinity College volleyball team came back from down, 2-1, to pick up a 3-2 victory over the WPI Engineers on Friday evening in the team's first game at the Hall of Fame Invitational, hosted by Smith College. The Bantams improve to 12-7 overall while WPI, ranked No. 7 in New England, falls to 19-5 on the year. Trinity picks it back up tomorrow for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. versus Brandeis and followed with a 3 p.m. match against Wheaton.
WPI cruised in the first set, coming away with a 13-25 victory before the Bantams returned the favor in set two and won, 25-16. The third set was a battle as both teams traded points before the Engineers prevailed, 24-26, to take a 2-1 lead in the overall match. Trinity held strong though, coming back to win 25-23, to force a deciding fifth set. The Bantams ended up taking that, 15-10, to cap off the come-from-behind victory.
Junior Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) led the way offensively for Trinity with 21 kills while senior co-captain Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.) posted 14 kills and three service aces. Fellow senior co-captain Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) also finished in double-digit kills with ten, while sophomore setter Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the team with five service aces. Junior Wyllie Boughton (Andover, Mass.) added five kills to go along with four block assists and a pair of aces herself.
