Box Score Waterville, Maine - Senior Paige Hanssen had 19 kills to lead the Colby College Mules to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action this evening at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Trinity falls to 13-9 overall and 2-7 in the NESCAC, but can still qualify for the NESCAC Championship Tournament with win in its regular-season finale tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Bates or losses by both Connecticut College and Colby in tomorrow's action. Colby, which hosts Amherst tomorrow at 1 p.m., is now 7-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference, while the Connecticut College Camels visit Bowdoin at 2 p.m. The Mules won by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 tonight.
The Mules had six aces in the opening set, while Hanssen had seven kills in the second set to push Colby's lead to 2-0. Trinity had a 17-16 lead in the first set after a kill by rookie Ally Conde (Danielson, Conn.) and the Bantams tied the second set at 23-all on a kill by senior co-captain OH Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.), but lost leads in both. In the third set, Trinity never trailed and scored eight of the last 11 points after the score was tied at 17-17. Colby came out strong and led, 15-8, in the fourth set before the Bantams battled hard to tie it up at 21-21 on a kill by first-year OH Hareena Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.). The Mules scored four of the next five to clinch the set and match. Underwood finished with 10 kills and 13 digs, while junior Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) added nine kills and 14 digs, and senior co-captain RS Hanna Engstrom (Hopkinton, Mass.) had seven kills and an attack percentage of .400. Hanssen hit .311 for the match, added 10 digs, three blocks, three assists, and two service aces.
