Hartford, Conn. - In a match that came down to the final singles spot, it was the Bates College Bobcats that found themselves on the winning side of a 5-4 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's tennis matchup, versus the Trinity College Bantams on Thursday afternoon in Hartford. Trinity falls to 3-8 on the year while the Bobcats improve to 6-7.
Bates opened a 2-1 overall match lead thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Trinity picked up a point at the top doubles position thanks to an 8-2 win by junior Elena Pellegrini (Leghorn, Italy) and classmate Julia Brogan (Falmouth, Maine).
Trinity came back to take a 3-2 lead after first-year Marta Drausnik (Zagreb, Croatia) won at the No. 2 singles spot, just before Brogan earned a hard-fought victory at the No. 3 position. The Bobcats came away with the No. 3 and No. 1 singles spot however, to make it a 4-4 match with the No. 5 singles deciding the winner. There, Lauren Hernandez of Bates came away with a 7-6 (4), 6-0 triumph to clinch the overall match for the visitors.
