MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore running back
William Kirby scored both touchdowns for the Trinity College football team in a 14-7 season finale victory over Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. The Bantams finish the 2021 season as runners-up in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with an 8-1 record while the Cardinals finish in the No. 3 spot at 6-3.
It wasn't until the third quarter that Kirby broke the game's scoreless tie with a 21-yard run up the gut and trucked his way into the endzone to give the Bantams a 7-0 lead. After punting on the ensuing possession, Wesleyan quickly got the football to its offense when Danny Banks intercepted Trinity's first play of the drive. Cardinal's quarterback David Estevez capped off a six-play drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ezra Jenifer to knot things back up, 7-7.
Trinity continued to feed the hot hand of Kirby who rushed for a career-high 145 yards and scored his second touchdown of the day with 13:31 remaining in the game on a 5-yard scamper to put his team back on top 14-7. Wesleyan would later have an opportunity to put together a two-minute drive for the tying score but its final chance at extending the game came to a halt when Estevez was sacked on fourth down by junior linebacker
Kevin Clark. Clark tallied two of the Bantams five sacks while junior safety
William Crowley also shined on defense with a team high nine tackles, and dropped the ball carrier behind the line-of-scrimmage on two-separate occasions.
Despite leaning on the running game today, junior quarterback
Spencer Fetter put together one of the best seasons by any quarterback in Trinity football history. He finishes the year with 26 touchdown passes, 2,518 passing yards and 195 completions, each of which are single-season program records.
Senior wide receiver
DeVante Reid finishes the year with 61 receptions. Only three other Bantams have recorded more receptions in a single-season. His 2021 season also ranks fourth in the record book for receiving yards with 890. Classmate and fellow wide receiver
Jonathan Girard concluded the year with 11 touchdown receptions which is a new Trinity football program record. He also registered 60 catches for 868 yards on the year.
