Trinity Baseball Wins Two Exciting Games Over New England College To Open 2021

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hartford, Conn. – Senior Vincent Capone (Ambler, Pa.) went 5-for-8 with three runs and four RBIs to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 4/9-3/6 doubleheader (7/9) sweep against the visiting New England College Pilgrims in the home squad's season opening games this afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity now has a five-game winning streak dating back to the 2019 NCAA Regional Finals entering a road doubleheader at Roger Williams tomorrow at noon.  The Pilgrims drop to 0-5.

Trinity trailed, 3-1, late in the opener, but scored three runs in the sixth inning to go ahead for good, 4-3.  First-year 3B Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) led off with a double and scored on a passed ball to make it, 3-2, and rookie 1B Seth Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) doubled home Capone to tie the game before scoring the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by junior Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.).  Bantam junior RHP William Simeone (Milton, Mass.) came into the game with a runner on second in the sixth inning and got out of the jam on a double play and a strike out, before fanning two batters during a perfect seventh frame to earn the win.  Junior RHP Cameron Crowley (Downers Grove, Pa.) did not allow a run and struck out three over 3.2 innings of relief for the Bantams, while Capone knocked in the first Trinity run with an RBI single in the first inning.  Freshman Garrett Langis (Rochester, N.H.) had a two-run homer and sophomore Wyatt Cameron (Salisbury, Vt.) took the loss despite yielding just one earned run with 4 K's over five-plus innings.

Capone smacked a two-run single to break a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning of the second game.  Trinity senior C Eric Thronson (McLean, Va.) hit a leadoff double and sophomore Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) followed with a single with both scoring on Capone's bases-loaded single.  Bantam rookie John Flannigan (Syosset, N.Y.) added an RBI in the eighth on a hit-by-pitch with the bases full.  Trinity scored four of its other runs on RBI singles by Meth, sophomore SS Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.), and Capone, and a fielder's choice by senior co-captain Alex Rodriguez (South Windsor, Conn.), and added two more on Pilgrim errors.  Trinity senior co-captain RHP Justin Olson (Avon, Conn.) tossed the last five outs to collect the win, while Meth and Matthews had two hits apiece.  New England College sophomore Devin Parson (Salisbury, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs in game two.
