Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College softball program dropped both games in its final home doubleheader of the season, falling to Tufts 5-1 and 13-2 Saturday afternoon. The Bantams (3-7, 2-4 NESCAC) were able to hang with Tufts (14-2, 8-1 NESCAC) in game one, but the Jumbo bats exploded in game two.
The Bantams will conclude its regular season with two games at Bates on Sunday. First pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m.
Tufts got things started early in game one, plating its first run in the top of the first. After Josie Steinberg singled and stole both second and third, Nicole Russo shot a laser up the middle to bring her in from third and make it 1-0.
Tufts pushed runs across once again in the top of the second. After three singles that snuck out of the infield to load the bases, Michelle Adelman drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Casey Maggiore from third. A tough error in the infield brought in the second Tufts run of the inning before the Bantams were able to get out of the inning, trailing 3-0.
Trinity responded in the bottom of the third. After a double that one-hopped the fence from senior
Cassidy Schiff (Darien, Conn.), classmate
Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) pushed a double down the right field line to make it 3-1.
Adelman picked up two more RBI in the top of the sixth. After singles from Emma Della Volpe and Reegan Coleman, the center fielder was able to poke a ball up the middle, making it 5-1.
In
game two, the Jumbos were silenced in the first before getting on the board to start the second. After an error put Nicole Russo on first, a base hit moved her to third before Rachel Moore's single brought her home to make it 1-0.
Tufts struck once again in the top of the third. A one-out single and stolen base set up back-to-back doubles from Russo and Mia Steinberg, making it 3-0 before the Bantam defense closed out the inning.
Trinity's offense got going in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases on a walk, a base hit, and an error, sophomore
Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) skied a deep fly ball to right field, scoring junior
Dominique Bolduc (Laconia, N.H.) from third making it 6-1.
Three more runs would come across for the Jumbos in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Emma Jacobson, to make it 9-1.
Trinity would get one back in the bottom of the fifth, seeing senior
Gillian Birk (Westport, Conn.) reach third on a pass ball before scoring on a single from sophomore Scarlett Gilette (Andover, Mass.).
Adelman continued her hot day at the plate, notching a double and scoring a run before back-to-back Jumbo singles made it 12-2. A double from Rachel Moore brought in another run before the Bantams closed out the inning. The hosts were unable to push a run across in the bottom of the sixth, where the game would come to conclusion.
