Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College softball program used a dominant game one performance in the circle from junior
Jordan Stephan to split its regular-season finale at Bowdoin, 3-0 and 14-7. Senior first baseman
Gillian Birk (Westport, Conn.) came on in relief in game two to pitch three innings, allowing just two earned runs while fanning a whopping six batters in the nightcap.
Trinity finishes its regular season with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-4 NESCAC record. Bowdoin wrapped up its 2021 season going 5-7 with the split.
Game one saw the Bantams play one of its best all-around games of the season, notching 11 hits and committing zero errors. The game was topped by a brilliant performance from Stephan in the circle, who went the distance while allowing just four hits and fanning two.
Junior
Alex Chambers (East Lyme, Conn.) picked up right where she left off the weekend prior against Bates, going three-for-four with two RBI.
The Bantams scored all three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the fourth, Chambers knocked a double to left-center field, driving in sophomore
Scarlett Gillette (Andover, Mass.) from second to make it 1-0. Two batters later, senior Kaitlyn DeCaupa (Milford, Mass.) was able to lift a ball into deep center field, scoring Chambers from third to make it 2-0. Chambers would add an RBI in the fifth, singling up the middle to score sophomore
Michaela Russell (Boston, Mass.) from second.
Game two saw Bowdoin's offense explode for 14 runs, scoring five runs in the opening two frames and capitalizing on two key Bantam errors to take the win. Trinity scored all three of its runs in the first two innings with the bases loaded; a ground ball RBI in the first gave the team an early 1-0 lead before three runs in the second gave the Bantams life. DeCapua continued with her hot bat from game one with a two-RBI single in the top of the second, and was followed by a bases-loaded walk drawn by Birk to make it 4-3. Another groundout RBI with the bases jammed made it 5-3, but it would be the last time that Trinity would keep the lead in the contest. The Bantams tacked on two more runs, but was unable to get past a six-run fourth inning.
Down by six in the bottom of the fourth, Birk came on to pitch for the first time in her career and was able to hold her own. The senior gave up four runs — two earned — and gave up just two hits while striking out six batters.
