Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College men's track and field sophomore Travis Martin (New Haven, Conn.) was officially honored as a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2021 Division III All-American by virtue of his fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run at NCAA Division III Championship Meet in North Carolina over the weekend. Martin, who was named as both the USTFCCCA) New England Region 2021 Men's Athlete of the Year and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field 2021 Most Outstanding Performer (Sabasteanski Award) this spring, posted a time of 3:47.77 in the NCAA Finals.
Trinity Head Men's Track and Field Coach John Michael Mason (3rd Season) and his staff were also impressively lauded this spring, as Mason was named the USTFCCCA New England Region Men's Coach of the Year, and he and his staff were named as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. Also in 2021, Martin, junior captain Kinnard Hughes (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore Kai Bailin (Shutesbury, Mass.), and first-years Joshua Tayi (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Ethan Wilkie (Ellington, Conn.) were each named to the All-NESCAC Team. Hughes earned All-NESCAC honors in the triple jump, while Bailin did so in the 400-meter hurdles. Martin shined this spring with all-conference honors in the 800-, 1,500-, and 5,000-meter runs. Rookies Tayi and Wilkie collected all-league recognition in the high jump and the shot put, respectively. Hughes, Bailin, Wilkie, and Martin also garnered USTFCCCA All-Region Honors, along with junior Robert Allen (Bloomfield, Conn.) in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and junior Tim Lautenbach (Weston, Conn.) in the 1,500-meter run.
Martin, who was named USTFCCCA All-Region in the 800, 1,500, and 5,000-meter events, went undefeated into the NCAA Championships, winning the 1,500-meter run at two different meets, the 800-meter run at the Trinity Quad, and 5,000-meter run at the Tufts Quad, and posted New England's top time of 2021 in the 800-meter run (1:51.27), the 1,500-meter run (3:50.18), and the 5,000-meter dash (14:32.02). He earned USTFCCCA All-American honors and All-Region honors for his spectacular time of 8:27.27 in the 3,000-meter run that qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championships as a rookie in 2019-20. Martin scored twice in the 2020 New England Division III Indoor Championships with a sixth-place time of 4:16.37 in the mile run and a fourth-place time of 10:20.68 as a member of Trinity's distance medley relay. He also runs cross country for the Bantams. A graduate of Common Ground High School, Martin is majoring in sociology at Trinity. He is the son of Terry Dagradi and Jim Martin.
Mason guided the Bantams to the No. 5 ranking in the New England region this spring. Along with assistants George Suitor (distance), Michael Goulet (throws), Bonnie Edmondson (throws), Ashley Gurzler (distance), Mark Hegarty (distance, steeple) and Bill Morgan (jumps), Mason (sprints and hurdles) has successfully navigated the Trinity squad through numerous obstacles over the last year. The Bantams have enjoyed a productive spring season of small invitationals and finished ninth in the New England Open Championship Meet. Mason, a 2012 Trinity graduate, is in his ninth season on the coaching staff of Trinity's men's and women's cross country teams and track and field teams. He was named Trinity's head men's and women's track and field coach in 2018-19.
Hughes' top distance of 14.13 in the triple jump was the second-longest in the DIII New England this year, earning him USTFCCCA All-Region. He also won the long jump at the Tufts University Quad Meet #1 this spring and posted Trinity's top distance of 2021 in that event (6.55 m). Hughes collected United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors as a rookie in the long jump, as he placed second in the event at the 2019 New England Division III Indoor Championship Meet. Hughes holds Trinity's all-time record in the indoor long jump at 22'09" and was named to the 2019 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. A graduate of Kenwood Academy, Hughes is majoring in economics at Trinity. He is the son of Cherie and Kenneth Hughes.
Bailin earned both All-NESCAC and USTFCCCA All-Region after his top time of 54.55 in the 400-meter hurdles; the fastest of any NESCAC competitor this spring. He won the event at three different meets this spring and qualified for the finals in the New England Open (NEICAAA) Championships over the weekend. He received USTFCCCA All-Region honors as a rookie in the 400-meter dash thanks to his Trinity-record time of 49.04 seconds in the indoor 400-meter dash last winter. A graduate of Amherst High School, Bailin is majoring in economics at Trinity.
Tayi's top height of 1.98 m in the high jump was the second-best in the NESCAC this year, and he won the event at three different meets this spring. He is a graduate of Taconic High School and is the son of Louise Amon and Lazare Tayi.
Wilkie's distance of 14.75 m in the shot out was the best of any NESCAC thrower this season, helping him earn both All-NESCAC and USTFCCCA All-region this spring. He also won the discus throw at three different meets, the hammer throw twice, and the shot put at the Trinity Quad this spring. Wilkie posted Trinity's top distance of 2021 in the discus throw (39.27 m) and the hammer throw (41.28 m) as well. He is a graduate of Ellington High School and is the son of Dawn and Michael Wilkie.
Allen set a new Trinity record with a second-place time of 10.64 in the 100-meter dash against competition from all NCAA divisions in the New England Open Championship Meet. He also placed fourth overall and first among Division III runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.01. His 100-meter finals time ranks 19th in the nation this spring. Allen had received USTFCCCA All-Region honors last winter by virtue of his first-place time of 6.89 seconds in the 60-meter dash (new Trinity record) that earned him an invitation to the 2020 NCAA Division III Championship meet in North Carolina. He scored at the 2020 New England Division III Indoor Championship Meet with fifth-place finishes in both the 60- and 200-meter dash final races. He also scored as a rookie in the 200 meters with a seventh-place performance at the 2019 New England Division III Indoor Championships. A graduate of the Loomis Chaffee School, Allen is majoring in computer science at Trinity. He is the son of Erica and Edward Allen.
A first-time USTFCCCA All-Region recipient, junior Tim Lautenbach (Weston, Conn.) was impressive in the 1,500-meter this spring. The junior saw three top-three finishes this season, including a personal-best time of 3:53.66 and a sixth place finish in the New England Open Championships. A biology major, he is the son of Denise and Bart Lautenbach.
