Trinity Men's Basketball Advances Past Gwynedd-Mercy In Buchanan First Round

Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior captain C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.) scored a game-high 26 points, including 19 in the first half, to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 86-74 win over the Gwynedd Mercy College Griffins in the opening round of the A.J. Buchanan Men's Basketball Classic this evening at Manhattanville College's Kennedy Gymnasium.  Trinity improves to 2-0 and will play the host Manhattanville Valiants in the championship game tomorrow at 6 p.m.  The Griffins, now 0-3, will face William Paterson University in the consolation game tomorrow at 4 p.m.  

Trinity found itself down, 10-0, five minutes into the game but Redd made a three-pointer and a two-pointer to quickly cut the lead in half.  The Bantams went ahead for the first time at 17-16 on a trey by first-year Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) with 10:35 on the clock and Redd made a pair of free throws with 1:09 remaining to give Trinity a 44-40 lead at the break.  Trinity pulled ahead further in the second half, taking a double-digit lead for the first time on a fastbreak layup by first-year forward Trevor MacDonald (Elmont, N.Y.), and led by at least nine and by as many as 18 points the rest of the way.

Redd was electric, making seven of nine shots from the field, four of six from long range, and all eight of his free throws.  He also pulled down eight rebounds.  Vetter had 214 points and four assists off the bench, MacDonald came off the pine for 13 points, and junior captain Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) scored 12 points.  Trinity outrebounded the Griffins, 43-27.  Aziz Parker had 15 points and Mike McCants added 14 points for Gwynedd Mercy.
