Women's Basketball Dumps Worcester State, 76-46

HARTFORD, Conn. — In the last home game of the semester, the Trinity College women's basketball team dominated Worcester State, 76-46, off the hands of Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.), who notched 25 points, three assists, nine rebounds, two steals and blocked a shot on Saturday. The Bantams improved to 9-1 overall, while the Lancers fell to 4-6. Trinity rounds out 2022 at the two-day Naismith Classic host by Springfield College, with its first matchup against the Pride on December 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Campbell opened the first quarter with a good jumper in the paint off a swift pass by Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) before Nyah Thomas retaliated for two points the other way. Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) passed the rock to Campbell who was posted up in the paint for a driving layup followed by a foul for a successful three-point opportunity for the junior. For back-to-back assists, Silva sent the ball towards Wax whose layup in the paint put Trinity up, 7-4. A jumper by Katie Hurynowicz shaved two points off the deficit before Hannah Marzo's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) unassisted layup brought the Bantams lead back up to three. The Lancers knotted it a 9-9 off a three-pointer by Emma Found before a jumper by Abby Martin snatched the lead for the visitors. Worcester tacked on five more points before Wax stepped back for a three off a well placed pass from Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.).

Trinity was down by three points going into the second quarter and the Worcester lead grew by four before Campbell shortened the gap with a two-point bucket sent by Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.). Campbell went to the basket in back-to-back runs both with the assist by Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.) followed by a layup from Fuller after the senior blocked the Lancers shot. Worcester continued to lead the second quarter before Lucy Dorion (Needham, Mass.) went to line for a pair of made free throws and tied the game at 30 a piece.

Trinity came out raining buckets in the third quarter with a 22-0 run until Erin Gallella shut the run down with two points off the offensive rebound by Julia Hamel. The explosive run was ignited by Campbell off a quick pass by Fuller 30 seconds into the quarter. Trinity held on strong defensively and only allowed the Lancers six points in the third with four defensive rebounds by Marzo, two by Campbell, one by Fuller along with a pair of steals by Fuller and one from Campbell and Wax. After the first basket by Campbell to start the quarter, Trinity never lost the lead.

The home team started the final quarter with twenty-point lead but a six-point rally by the visitors cut the deficit to 14. Twardosky had back-to-back three-point jumpers followed by a three-point bucket by Tori Varsamis  put the Bantams up, 65-42. A beautiful block by Silva allowed Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) to pull up for a layup off a nice pass by Stevens. Slofkiss grabbed an offensive rebound for a second chance opportunity topped off with another three-pointer by Varsamis. Twardosky remained hot behind the arc with two more back-to-back buckets, with the second one coming off a huge steal by Slofkiss to end the contest at 76-46.
