HARTFORD, Conn. - Calvin Caputo scored three goals to lead the visiting Williams College Ephs to a 9-5 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field at Tunsill Muldoon Stadium. The game was the season opener for both teams. Junio attackman
Andrew Fearey (Duxbury, Mass.) scored twice for the Bantams, who will visit Salve Regina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in their next game.
Trinity struck first 9:31 into the game when senior tri-captain midfielder
Graham Penfield (Strafford, Vt.) assisted classmate
Connor McCulloch (Alexandria, Va.) for the first goal of the year. Williams answered with a 4-0 run that lasted into the second quarter, but McCulloch fed
Jake Baker (South Londonderry, Vt.) and
Ryan Werner (Weston, Conn.) on consecutive tallies to pull the home team to within a goal at 4-3 with 4:06 left in the first half. Calvin Caputo scored his second goal of the half for Williams with 1:37 on the clock to make the score, 5-3, at halftime.
Williams scored the first three goals of the third quarter to go ahead, 9-5, before Fearey scored unassisted with 4:40 left in before the last break. Fearey scored again with 10:58 remaining in the game, but Trinity put just one more shot on goal the rest of the game. The Bantams outshot Williams, 39-36, and ground balls were even at 22 apiece. The Ephs committed 18 turnovers to just 11 for Trinity. Matt Freitas had 15 saves for Williams and sophomore
Cooper Yaccino (Chappaqua, N.Y.) stopped 13 shots for Trinity.
