Volleyball Battles Past Williams in Three Sets

The Bantams collect their first win over the Ephs since 2014

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Trinity College Women's Volleyball blanked host Williams College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-23), in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Chandler Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bantams improve to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the NESCAC, while the Ephs drop to 3-4 in conference and 10-5 on the season. The win is the Bantams first over Williams College since the 2000 season.

The Bantams raced to a 7-0 lead in the first set behind kills from juniors Ava Boloyan (American Canyon, Calif.) and Eva Lekovic (San Marino, Calif.). Boloyan sandwiched a block and a kill around a strike from senior Margaret McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) to build a 10-2 advantage. The Bantams offense continued to pull away with kills from sophomore Ellie Gordon (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Lola Craig (Los Angeles, Calif.) to create an 18-8 deficit. Lekovic slammed three kills over the final points as Trinity claimed the 25-15 win.

Following an ace and kill from Craig to open the second set, Williams rattled off a 9-3 run to take a 9-5 advantage. Trailing 13-9, the Bantams pulled even at 13-13 with a 4-0 run, but the Ephs maintained a 17-15 lead. Trinity grabbed the lead with a 7-2 run, featuring aces from first-year Scarlett Jago (Allentown, Pa.) and sophomore Caroline Howell (Houston, Texas), to take a 22-19 lead. The sides would tie twice more over the final points, but a kill from Lekovic and an Ephs error gave Trinity the 25-23 win.

The Bantams seized control with a 10-3 run to kick off the third set, powered by four kills from McCarthy. Williams responded with an 8-2 run to close the gap to 12-11. Trinity regained control with strikes from Craig, Boloyan and junior Bella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to hold a 17-15 edge. Tied at 17-17, Trinity pulled ahead with kills from Lekovic and McCarthy and an ace from Boloyan to take a 21-17 lead. The sided traded points until a 4-0 run from Williams knotted the score at 23-23, but Trinity sealed the 25-23 win with strikes from Craig and Gordon.

Trinity had seven attackers record a kill, led by a match-high 13 kills, three digs and two blocks. McCarthy chipped in 10 kills with five digs, while Craig added eight kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace. Boloyan registered six kills, three digs, three blocks and two aces. Howell tallied 25 assists with seven digs, while Jago grabbed a match-high 11 digs in the win.

The Bantams will look to remain in the win column when they host Bowdoin College in NESCAC action at Oosting Gymnasium Friday night. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. Williams travels to Tufts for a NESCAC match Friday at 7:30 p.m.
