Fourth Quarter Eruption Leads Women's Basketball Past Coast Guard

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team held visiting United States Coast Guard Academy to two points in the fourth quarter to secure a 53-38 win in a non-conference clash at Oosting Gymnasium Monday night. The Bantams improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Bears dip to  5-1 overall.

After surrendering a game-opening three-pointer to the Bears, the Bantams rattled off a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes, powered by nine points from senior Reilly Campbell, to build a 15-5 lead for Trinity. Sophomore Theresa Twardosky beat the buzzer with a layup to close the frame with the Bantams leading 19-8 after the first quarter.

The Bears shifted the momentum in the second quarter, orchestrating a 10-2 run over the opening five minutes behind five points from sophomore Dorothy Stotts to close the gap to a possession, 21-18. Stotts added five more points as a three-pointer at the 1:42 mark handing the Bears a 25-23 lead. The Bantams wrapped the period with a layup from junior Hannah Marzo and free throws from Campbell to hold a 27-25 lead at the half.

Trailing 29-28 with less than eight minutes to play in the third quarter, Campbell netted five straight points to grab a 35-30 lead, but the Bears clawed back with a 6-0 run as junior Glory Blethen scored four points.

Trinity took control in the fourth quarter, smothering the Bears defensively, allowing only two points in the period. First year Olivia Vick provided a spark off the bench that ignited a 17-0 run by the Bantams. Vick poured in 12 points over the next eight minutes as the Bantams closed out the 53-38 victory.

Campbell led the Bantams with a game-high 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Vick chipped in 12 points and three rebounds, while senior Emma Wax tallied 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.

The Bantams controlled the rebounding battle, 43-30, and points in the paint, 30-14, during the game. The Trinity bench outscored the Coast Guard bench, 19-2. The Bantams connected on 20-of-54 (37%) from the field, including 2-of-14 (14.3%) from three-point range, and 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the foul line. The Bears shot 16-of-54 (29.6%) from the floor, 4-of-16 (25%) from three-point , and 2-of-8 (25%) from the free throw line.

The Bantams returns to the court with a non-conference road trip to Smith College on November 26th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
