HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior captain
Julius Benthin (Norderstadt, Germany) won the deciding match in five games to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 5-3 victory over the visiting Princeton University Tigers in the quarterfinal round of the College Squash Association (CSA) National Team Championship (Potter Trophy) Tournament this afternoon at Kellner Center. Trinity, seeded No. 6 in the eight-team field, avenges a 7-2 loss to the Tigers in New Jersey last month and improves to 16-4.with its fourth victory in a row. The Bantams will face No. 2-seeded Pennsylvania in tomorrow's semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Princeton will play No. 7-seeded Drexel in the consolation round tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Trinity.
Trinity jumped out a 4-1 lead, beginning with a 3-1 victory by first-year Joachim Chuah Han Wen (Shah Alam, Malaysia) at the No. 3 position. A win in five games by Princeton's Federico Sosa over Bantam junior
Khamal Cumberbatch (St. James, Barbados) at the bottom of the ladder tied the match at 1-1, but Trinity rattled off the next three points on victories by jjunior
Mohamed Sharaf (Sheikh Zayed City, Egypt) and first-years
Benedek Takacs (Szatymaz, Hungary), and
Daniel Simon (Budapest, Hungary). Both Sharaf at the top of the ladder and Takacs turned the tables on Princeton opponents that they had lost against in the regular season meeting.
Princeton pulled to within a point thanks to a 3-1 win at the No. 2 spot by Karim Elbarbary over Trinity's
Abdelrahman Nassar (New Cairo, Egypt) and a 3-2 triumph by Hassan Khalil over Bantam sophomore Marwan ElBorolossy (12th of October, Egypt) at the No. 5 spot. Benthin and Princeton's Gordon Lam alternated wins back and forth for a 2-2 tie before Benthing clinched the match with an 11-4 win in the fifth game. The ninth match was not played because the result had been decided.
"We learned from our loss down there and played much better this time around," said Trinity Head Coach
Paul Assaiante. "We lost four matches this year, all on the road. You can't just be a little better than another team to win in their facility. You need to be quite a bit better than them."
