HARTFORD, Conn. — A four-run rally in the eighth inning by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers sealed the tough 8-6 Trinity College baseball loss at home on Sunday. The Bantams moved to 2-2 on the season, while MIT improved to 2-5. Trinity continues it home stretch as it hosts Dean College on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m first pitch.
The Navy & Gold opened up the scoring in the first inning after
Sean Meth's (Port Washington, N.Y.) single through the right side brought home
Jack Mathews (Wesport, Conn.). Matthews found himself in scoring position after a single up the middle and a stolen second base before coming home a batter later. Two triples in the third inning added to the Trinity lead as
Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Vedra, Fla.)Â had a three-bagger to bring
Brandon Chow home (Grennwich, Conn.), followed by a triple by Meth to allow Bernstein to score. Through the third inning opener
Kody Perry (Greenbrae, Calif.) had a few base runners, but always rectified the sticky situation with no runs allowed until a well-hit three-run home run by Owen Malone tied the game at three apiece in the fourth inning.
Zev Moore reached first on a fielder's choice and allowed Teddy Schoenfeld to crossed the plate and put the Engineers up 4-3. Bernstein retaliated to bring the tying run home after his groundout to second base sent
William Sawyer (Easthampton, Mass.) across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of runs in the sixth stanza helped Trinity regain the two-run lead.
Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) flied out to right field as
Dylan Schnitzer (Huntington, N.Y.) came home followed by a single by Chow allowed Sawyer to score.
Luke Fitzgerald doubled along the right field line, but an error by the right fielder allowed him to reach third base and clear the loaded bags as Malone, Eitan Moore and Tyler Godfrey scored. Fitzgerald crossed home after Z. Moore grounded out to the pitcher to put MIT up, 8-6.
Meth led the Bantams and went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Bernstein also recorded two runs batted in.
