Volleyball Cruises in Tri-Match with a Pair of 3-0 Sweeps

The Bantams toppled the visiting Mitchell Mariners and Worcester State Lancers in straight matches.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Ava Boloyan (American Canyon, Calif.) led the Trinity Volleyball team with a combined 20 kills in the 3-0 victories over Mitchell College (25-10, 25-15, 25-14) and Worcester State (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) University on Saturday at Trinity's Tri-Match in the Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improved to 3-1 on the season, while Worcester State and Mitchell dipped to 3-3 and 2-3, respectively. Trinity travels to nearby University of Hartford on September 12 for a 6 p.m. match.

Despite scoring the first point in each of the three sets, the Mariners had no answer for Trinity in the opening match of the day. Boloyan dominated offensively with a dozen kills and registered a solo block and a pair of block assists against Mitchell. Grace Sullivan (Fort Worth, Texas) dished out 16 assists and a trio of serving aces, while first-year Scarlett Jago (Allentown, Pa.) tallied 12 digs.

After Mitchell notched the opening point in the first set, Margaret McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) went on a eight-point serving run to put the Navy & Gold up, 9-1. Later in the set, Trinity led by seven before Jago's seven-point serving run brought the Bantams to match point, 24-7.

In the following set, Sarai Davis (Fairburn, Ga.) pushed the Bantams ahead, 16-5, with a five-point serving run, including an ace of the sophomore's second serve. Grace Soltis (Newtown, Conn.) delivered the final kill for Trinity in the second set. Mitchell played it closer to the vest and was only down two points before Jago's five-point serving run edged the Bantams closer to victory, 21-13.

In the beginning of the final match of the day for the Bantams, the Lancers never let Trinity have much of a lead, keeping within a few points throughout the set. With the score close at 22-20 in Trinity's favor, a service error brought it back to the home team as Jago served the final two points, highlighted by a kill by Ellie Gordon (The Villages, Fla.) to put Trinity within one point of a set one victory.

The second set warranted a similar result as the Bantams' Bella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, NY) made her mark with 5 kills, leading to Trinity's 25-17 win. In the final set, the teams were knotted 6-6 before Lola Craig (Los Angeles, Calif.) ignited the separation in a 7-2 run followed by four-point serving run by Boloyan capped off by a kill from Craig to put Trinity up, 18-10.
