NEW YORK, NY – After a tight match on the road, #1 Trinity Men's Squash clinched 5-4 win over Columbia University on Sunday afternoon. The Bantams grow their record 11-0, while the Lions drop 4-5 overall.
Bantams first win of the day was collected by Mohamed Sharaf in a 45 minute match, Sharaf and the Lion had a close set two that ended in the upper teens clearing the path for Trinity to come out on top 3-0 (2-11, 16-18, 10-12). Abdelrahman Nassar tacked on another victory for the Bantams after a gritty five set performance (11-5, 2-11, 11-8, 5-11, 4-11) winning 3-2. To close out the first set of matches Danial Izham solidified the third straight win of the day with a 3-1 victory over Lions Rutvik Rau, 11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 9-11 set scores.
The Bantams surrendered their first loss of the day after Mateo Restrepo was bested by Paarth Ambani on the hardwood, 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-4). Marawan ElBorolossy tacked on the Bantams fourth win of the day with a 3-1 victory over Columbia (4-11, 11-7, 11-13, 7-11). And sophomore Joachim Chuah Han Wen stayed competitive for five sets, but was downed in the final set (7-11, 11-8, 14-16, 11-9, 11-5)
The three last matches were locked 1-1 to start the final wave. Aly El Tokhy was unable to build up a momentous lead over Lions Harold Castiaux falling 3-1 (11-4, 7-11, 13-11, 11-8). Bantams Benedek Takacs played smart, closing out his match 3-1 to lift the bantams to a two match point lead, 5-3 overall. The final set remained close as Julius Benthin took back-to-back wins, growing his lead 2-1. Lions Adam Goad managed to knot the score 2-2, in the third set Goad held a lead of 10-6 downing Benthin 3-2 for the final.
The Bantams will compete on Saturday, February 3rd as they host Princeton for a 1PM match in the George A. Kellner Squash Courts.
