Box Score WORCESTER, MA – Trinity College Women's Basketball defeated host Worcester State University, 70-47, in a non-conference game on John Brissette Court Tuesday afternoon. The Bantams improved to 9-5 on the season, while the Lancers dropped to 1-13 overall.
Trinity got a jump on the lead early with a 11-2 point run in the first quarter led by senior Reilly Campbell who netted 7 of the eleven. With a quick change in pace the Lancers closed the gap putting up 8 points within three minutes of play to make it a one point game with 2:04 remaining in the first. Campbell and Lucy Dorion both responded to the Lancers by each collecting a basket to give the Bantams a cushion heading into the second, 15-11 closing out the first quarter of play.
In the opening minute of the second Campbell made back-to-back layups to set the Bantams on a roll. Senior Bria Fuller connected with a three-point play which was answered immediately by Worcester's Abby Martin who netted a trey, 22-14 with 7:58 remaining in the half. Trinity continued to hold their lead but were tested by the Lancers as they turned the deficit to just six points with 3:14 on the clock, 30-24. With made layups across the board from Emma Wax, Indi DelRocco, Kiki, Fossebender and Reilly Campbell lifted the Bantams back to a comfortable lead of 38-27 over Worcester to close out the first half. Campbell knocked down a game-high of 17 points and 5 boards in the first half while Emma Wax followed the seniors lead with 8 points and 2 steals.
Within the first 20 seconds of play Emma Wax pulled up for an easy two points kicking off the third for the Bantams, 40-27. With two quick baskets from the Lancers the score was frozen at 45-34 as both teams could not hit a shot for almost two minutes of play. At 3:01 Melissa Whitmore would cure the drought as she cashed in two free throws, followed shortly by a made layup causing the Lancers to use up a 30 second timeout with 1:39 left in the third, 49-37. Trinity would wrap up the third quarter after baseline cut by Avery Marzo to tack on another two points for the Bantams, 53-39.
In the fourth quarter Trinity would capitalize off of Worcester's 8 team turnovers as they closed out the game adding 15 to the Lancers 8 points. Lucy Dorion went 2-for-2 from the field and from the free throw strip to collect 6 of her 10 points from the bench for Trinity. The Bantams cap off the game 70-47 over the Worcester State University Lancers in the non-conference play Tuesday afternoon.
Campbell powered the Bantams offense with her eighth double digit game of the season, posting a game-high 19 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor, with a game-high of three blocks. Wax chipped in 13 points with five assists, while Dorion added 10 points and three boards as a sixth woman for Trinity.
The Lancers had one scorer in double figures, led by 16 points from Katie Hurynowicz who added 10 rebounds and one assists. Abby St. Martin tallied 9 points, while both her and Siarra Francis collected five boards each for the Worcester line.
The Bantams dominated the stat lines with 38-30 in the rebounding column, points in paint, 48-18, and bench points, 29-10, during the contest. Trinity connected on 31-of-69 (44.9%) from the floor, including 2-of-14 (14.3%) from three-point range and 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the foul line. Stevens shot 15-of-48 (31.3%) from the field, 5-of-13 (38.5%) from three-point, and 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line.
The Bantams will continue their travels on the road as they head to Conn. College Friday for a NESCAC battle at 7PM.
