Trinity Swimming & Diving Powers Past Skidmore with Impressive Season Opener

| By:

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Swimming & Diving team opened the 2024-25 season with an impressive 194.5-105.5 victory over visiting Skidmore College.

The day began with a historic performance from the Bantams' 200-yard medley relay team, composed of senior Rachel Kim, junior Charlotte Murphree, first-year Iris Huerta, and senior Izzy Tagliaferro. The quartet not only won the event but also set a new pool record with a time of 1:48.56.

Trinity's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rachel Lundy, Niamh Kastner, Huerta, and Tagliaferro also claimed first place in their event. In individual competition, Tagliaferro had a standout performance, anchoring both victorious relay teams and winning the 50-yard freestyle (25.38) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.87).

Murphree was another highlight, earning first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.03), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.00), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.85). Her times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke were both just shy of the pool records, and she currently ranks second in the NESCAC in both events.

Kim contributed with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.97) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.48). She was also part of the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Huerta had a standout debut, winning both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly, while also contributing to both winning relay teams. Her times in the butterfly events currently place her sixth in the NESCAC.

First-year Kathryn Unverzagt made her collegiate debut within the lanes for the Bantams with a standout performance in the 200-yard backstroke finishing first place with a time of 2:12.36.

On the diving board, Cass Cronin took first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 180.15 and second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 177.46.

"I am so proud of how our women's team performed today," exclaimed Coach Hagy. "We came into this meet knowing that Skidmore would be a very competitive meet. We have been training hard the last 3 weeks and we are excited to see a pool record go down! Our women pulled out an incredible win with some impressive swims for much needed points! We look forward to building off this win and carrying our energy into a busy NESCAC weekend in a week!"

The Bantams will next compete against Tufts and Williams at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, November 23, at 1 p.m.
