BRONX, N.Y. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team defeated Saint Joseph University (CT) 93-73 in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at The APEX at Lehman College. With the win, the Bantams advance to the championship game, set for Saturday, December 28th at 2 p.m. Trinity improves to 8-2 on the season, while the Blue Jays fall to 4-5.
The Bantams outscored USJ in every quarter, benefiting from a strong bench performance that contributed 57 points to USJ's 8. Trinity also dominated in the paint, 48-28, and capitalized on 13 second-chance points and 15 fast-break points compared to USJ's 8 and 9, respectively.
Senior forward Samantha Slofkiss led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Avery Marzo added 13 points, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 3 rebounds. Junior Theresa Twardosky contributed 11 points and 4 rebounds, while seniors Hannah Marzo and sophomore Lucy Palmer each registered 4 assists.
Saint Joseph was led by Jordan Ouellette, who scored a game-high 27 points. Maya Slisz added 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Taylor Verboven recorded 10 points and a game-high 7 rebounds.
The Blue Jays cut a 5-point deficit to just 3 at the end of the first quarter, but Trinity responded with a 6-point run to lead 23-17 after one. In the second quarter, the Bantams dominated inside, scoring 16 of their 21 points in the paint. After USJ's 6-0 run cut Trinity's lead to 36-32, back-to-back three-pointers from Kiki Fossbender and Avery Marzo pushed the lead back to 44-36 at halftime.
Trinity exploded in the second half, opening the third quarter with an 11-2 run. The Bantams scored 49 points in the second half to close out the 93-73 victory.
Trinity shot 37-for-66 (56.7%) from the field, 7-for-17 (41.2%) from three-point range, and 12-for-19 (63.2%) from the free-throw line. Saint Joseph shot 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the floor, 3-for-11 (27.3%) from beyond the arc, and 18-for-25 (72.0%) from the charity stripe.
The Bantams will face Neumann University in the championship game on Saturday, December 28th at 2 p.m.
