NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball season came to a close in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship Tournament as the Bantams lost to Baldwin Wallace, 59-54, at the Hawk Center Friday evening. Trinity wraps with a 19-8 record, while the Yellowjackets moved to 21-6 overall.
Senior Reilly Campbell logged her third career 30-point game with 30 points, shooting 12-of-22 from the floor, with seven rebounds. Sophomore Theresa Twardosky chipped in 12 points on four three-pointers, while senior Emma Wax tallied eight points and four rebounds.
Emily Irwin led all scorers with a game-high 19 points and a game-high five assists for Baldwin Wallace. Caely Ressler notched 14 points with nine rebounds, while Bella Vaillant posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Bantams raced to an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of buckets from Wax. Baldwin Wallace rallied with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Ressler, to hand the Yellowjackets a 9-8 advantage. Trinity closed the frame on an 8-5 run to hold a 17-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
Tied at 17-17 with 8:08 on the clock, Twardosky buried three straight three-pointers for Trinity to build a 26-17 lead with six minutes to play. The sides traded buckets over the next few minutes as a jumper from Campbell handed the Bantams a 32-22 with 2:19 remaining in the second quarter. Both defenses held the opposing side scoreless down the stretch to take the 32-22 score into the break.
Campbell scored Trinity's opening five points of the third quarter to maintain a 37-30 edge for the Bantams. Baldwin Wallace battled back with an 8-1 run to grab a 38-37 lead at the 2:54 mark. Wax knocked down a jumper to slow the rally and Campbell closed the quarter with a three-point play to regain a 42-38 lead entering the final quarter.
A pair of layups from Campbell pushed the Bantams advantage to 46-38 at the 8:26 mark, but the Yellowjackets responded with a 13-5 run, punctuated with a triple from Ressler as Baldwin Wallace evened the score at 51-51. The Yellowjackets took the lead on a layup from Emily Irwin, but Campbell used a three-point play to put the Bantams within a point, 55-54, with 20 seconds remaining. The Yellowjackets fended off the Bantams from the free throw line to secure the 59-54 win.
Baldwin Wallace outrebounded Trinity, 45-32, during the game. The Bantams connected on 21-of-59 (35.6%) from the field, 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three-point range, and 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the foul line. The Yellowjackets shot 21-of-60 (35%) from the floor, 5-of-25 (20%) from three-point, and 12-of-16 (75%) from the free throw line.
