NCAA Championship Preview: Trinity v. Hobart

HARTFORD, Conn. – The top seeded Hobart College Statesman and the second seeded Trinity College Bantams will battle in the National Championship Saturday evening in Koeppel Community Center, puck drop will be at 7:00PM. 

Bantam Bytes

  • After a 2-1 victory over Adrian College in the Semifinals Thursday night the Bantams secured a spot in the Championship game. Trinity holds a 25-3-1 record entering national title play.

  • Nationally, the Bantams rank second in penalty kill percentage (.910), scoring defense with a 1.21 average, and fifth in scoring margin at 2.17.

  • In conference, Trinity led the league in points (240), points per game (8.89), assists (146), assists per game (5.4), goals (94), goals per game (3.48), goals allowed (34), and goals allowed per game (1.26).

  • Senior Ned Blanchard finished sixth in the NESCAC in assists with 15.

  • Junior Richard Boysen finished 8th in conference in points with 22 with eleven goals and 11 assists.

  • Senior Christian Hayes has posted 18 points behind a team-high nine goals, nine assists, and eleven blocks.

  • Senior Kyle Tomaso has tallied 18 points with 12 assists.

  • Sophomore goaltender Devon Bobak owns a 1.193 goals against average, ranking second in the nation, with a .945 save percentage and 581 saves.

  • The Bantams are 3-6-3 all-time against Hobart, last meeting was in December of this season Hobart bested Trinity 2-1 on our home ice.

Scouting the Statesman

  • Hobart finished up the regular season with a 25-2-1 record and a 16-1-1 mark in conference. NCAA Tournament play has the Statesmen sitting 27-1-1 entering the National Championship game.

  • The Statesman are 13-0 win streak posting victories over Curry College (4-3, 4OT), Utica University (3-1) in the National Tournament.

  • Hobart is ranked first nationally for penalty kill percentage (.967), scoring defense (1.00), scoring margin (4.30), scoring defense (5.30), with a win percentage of 91%.

  • Hobart was crowned the National Champions last year after a 3-2, OT win against Adrian College.

  • Sophomore goaltender Damon Beaver is ranked first nationally with a win percentage of 92%, holding a goals against average of .984, attaining a .960 save percentage with 478 saves. 

  • Tanner Hartman leads the Statesman's offense registering 45pts, netting 20 goals with a .200 shot percentage and dished out 25 assists on the season.  

  • Artem Buzoverva holds 31 points with the second highest assist in the season with 23 and 8 goals for Hobart. 

  • Jared Patterson and Matthieu Wuth tallied 32 blocks thus far, nine more than Hobarts third highest from the pair of Cooper Swift and Austin Mourar each with 23.

HISTORY vs. Hobart

  • The Bantams have battled against the Statesman 12 times, landing on a record of 3-6-3 with their first meeting in 1978-79 to the recent meeting in Koeppel Center early December. 

  • Last meeting with Hobart the Bantams were bested 2-1.

  • Statesman have won the past two meetings, Trinity defeated Hobart on their home ice in 2021-22 with a 4-3 victory.
