Volleyball Rallies To Five Set Victory at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Trinity College Volleyball squad overcame a pair of one-set deficits to defeat host United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in five sets, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 18-16), in a non-conference battle at Roland Hall Tuesday night. The Bantams rise to 8-0 on the season, while the Bears dip to 7-4 overall.
 
Senior Eva Lekovic set the program-record for kills in a game, slamming a career-high 27 kills on a career-high 53 attempts with six digs and three blocks, while junior Ellie Gordon registered a career-high 21 kills on a career-high 51 attempts with nine digs and five blocks. Lekovic bested the previous program-high of 26 kills set by Kate Giddens during the 2014 season. Junior Caroline Howell posted her third double-double of the season, dishing out a match-high 35 assists with 13 digs, and senior Grace Sullivan logged a career-high 27 assists with nine digs. Sophomore Chloe Gentile matched the program mark for second-most blocks in a game, recording a career-high nine blocks with six digs and two kills, while senior Bella Caffuzzi added seven kills and two blocks. Sophomore Scarlett Jago snared 26 digs with six assists and two service aces in the win.
 
The Bears had three players post double-digit kill totals, led by 15 kills from Amelia Matson. Allie Wildsmith chipped in 14 kills, eight digs and four blocks, while Shannon Shaw notched 11 kills with 15 digs and four blocks. Sophia Rosenburg doled out 34 assists, while Kaela France grabbed a match-high 32 digs.
 
The Bantams will look to extend their record-breaking start to the season when they travel to Williams College for their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener Friday at 7:00 p.m.
